.44 Magnum Once-Fired Brass for Reloading

The .44 Magnum, officially designated the .44 Remington Magnum, is a powerful, well-established revolver and rifle cartridge. Introduced in the 1950s, it remains a popular choice for handgun hunting, target shooting, and recreational rifle shooting.

US Reloading Supply offers .44 Magnum once-fired brass for reloaders seeking a dependable supply of cartridge cases. Explore the available options below to find the brass that best suits your reloading needs.

Product Summary

Our .44 Magnum brass is sourced from previously fired ammunition and is available in three variations:

  • Standard Brass: Traditional brass cases, without nickel-plated cases mixed in.
  • Nickel-Plated Brass: Nickel-plated brass cases, separated from standard brass.
  • Seconds Brass: Once-fired brass casings with cosmetic imperfections. May contain unplated brass, nickel-plated brass, or a mixture of both. The proportion of each is not guaranteed.

All three variations are wet washed and dry tumbled/polished to remove surface residue and improve their appearance. Cases are not de-primed by US Reloading Supply, and mixed headstamps should be expected.

As with all once-fired brass, individual cases should be inspected and prepared according to established reloading practices before use.

Quality Standards & Processing (Click to expand)

Quality Standards & Processing

US Reloading Supply's .44 Magnum once-fired brass is wet washed and dry tumbled/polished to remove surface residue and improve its appearance. Cases are sorted and inspected during processing and separated into standard brass, nickel-plated brass, and Seconds categories.

As previously fired cartridge cases, our brass may exhibit normal signs of use, including minor scratches, discoloration, and small cosmetic imperfections. Seconds brass may have more noticeable cosmetic defects and is offered separately from our standard brass selections.

Our .44 Magnum brass is not de-primed during processing. Cases may contain spent primers and require additional preparation before reloading.

While we take care in sorting and inspecting our brass, no sorting or inspection process is 100% accurate. Reloaders also have different equipment, procedures, expectations, and standards. For these reasons, we include 2–3% extra brass with every order to help account for cases that may not meet an individual customer's requirements.

All cartridge cases must be individually inspected by the reloader before use. Customers are responsible for determining case suitability and completing all necessary preparation in accordance with their equipment manufacturers' instructions and published reloading references.

Reloading Notes (Click to expand)

Reloading Notes

.44 Magnum once-fired brass requires inspection and appropriate case preparation before reloading. Previously fired cases may vary in condition and dimensions, making it important to evaluate each case individually.

  • Case Inspection: Examine each case for cracks, splits, excessive wear, deformation, or other conditions that may make it unsuitable for reloading.
  • Case Preparation: De-prime, resize, and check case length as necessary, following the instructions provided by your reloading equipment manufacturer.
  • Primer Selection: Depending on the components and intended application, published .44 Magnum load data may specify either standard Large Pistol or Magnum Large Pistol primers. Always consult the applicable published load data to determine the correct primer for your particular load.
  • Case Sorting: Mixed headstamps may exhibit differences in case construction and internal capacity. Sorting by headstamp may be beneficial for reloaders seeking greater consistency, but it is not necessarily required for general recreational shooting.
  • Published Load Data: Always use current, reputable reloading manuals and component manufacturers' published data appropriate for the .44 Magnum cartridge.

Reloaders should follow established safe reloading practices and verify that their components and equipment are appropriate for the intended application.

Cartridge Information (Click to expand)

Cartridge Information

The .44 Remington Magnum, commonly known as the .44 Magnum, was introduced in 1955 following years of experimentation with higher-performance .44 Special ammunition. Firearms enthusiast and writer Elmer Keith was instrumental in advocating for the development of a more powerful commercial cartridge based on the .44 Special.

Smith & Wesson developed a revolver for the new cartridge, later designated the Model 29, while Remington developed the commercial ammunition. The resulting combination established the .44 Magnum as one of the most recognizable American handgun cartridges.

The .44 Magnum's reputation extended well beyond the shooting community when the Smith & Wesson Model 29 was prominently featured in the 1971 film Dirty Harry, starring Clint Eastwood. The film introduced the cartridge to a much broader audience and helped transform an already respected hunting and sporting cartridge into an enduring symbol of American firearms culture.

The .44 Magnum and .44 Special share a historical and dimensional relationship, but they are distinct cartridges. Many revolvers chambered for .44 Magnum can also accommodate .44 Special ammunition; however, .44 Magnum ammunition must never be used in a firearm chambered only for .44 Special. Always follow the firearm manufacturer's caliber and ammunition specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions (Click to expand)

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is .44 Magnum once-fired brass ready to reload?

These cases have been wet washed and polished but are otherwise unprocessed. Please follow your established case preparation procedures before reloading.

2. Can .44 Magnum brass be reloaded multiple times?

Yes, .44 Magnum brass can often be reloaded multiple times, depending on its condition, previous use, and reloading practices. There is no guaranteed number of reloads for any individual case. Each case must be inspected before reuse, and cases showing signs of damage or excessive wear should be discarded.

3. Will all the cases have the same headstamp?

No. Our .44 Magnum brass is sold with mixed headstamps unless otherwise specified. Customers may receive cases from multiple manufacturers.

4. Can .44 Magnum brass be used to reload .44 Special ammunition?

No. Although the cartridges are closely related, .44 Magnum and .44 Special use different case lengths. Always use cartridge cases appropriate for the ammunition being assembled and follow published reloading data.

5. Why does US Reloading Supply include extra brass?

We include approximately 2–3% extra brass to help account for variations in case condition, sorting accuracy, and individual reloading standards. Every customer should inspect their cases and determine which are suitable for their intended use.

6. What primers does .44 Magnum brass use?

.44 Magnum uses Large Pistol primers. Depending on the components and intended application, published load data may specify standard or Magnum Large Pistol primers. Always follow the applicable published data.

7. Does .44 Magnum brass need to be trimmed before reloading?

Not necessarily. Case length should be checked during preparation, and trimming performed when required by the applicable specifications and reloading procedures. Consistent case length is particularly important when applying a roll crimp, as variations can affect crimp consistency. Always follow your reloading equipment manufacturer's instructions and published reloading data.

8. Can the same .44 Magnum brass be reloaded for revolvers and rifles?

Yes. .44 Magnum cartridge cases may be used to assemble ammunition for compatible revolvers and rifles chambered for .44 Magnum. However, ammunition requirements can vary by firearm. Always follow the firearm manufacturer's instructions and published load data appropriate for the intended application.

9. Does nickel-plated .44 Magnum brass have a different service life than standard brass?

Nickel-plated and standard brass cases may exhibit different wear characteristics during repeated reloading. Case life depends on several factors, including the condition of the brass and the reloading procedures used. Neither type has a guaranteed number of reloads, and both require careful inspection before reuse.

10. What causes .44 Magnum brass to develop split case mouths?

Repeated firing and reloading can work-harden brass, making it more susceptible to cracking. Case-mouth expansion and crimping can also contribute to fatigue over time. Inspect case mouths carefully during preparation, and discard cases showing cracks or splits.
