The .256 Winchester Magnum: An Innovative Idea Ahead of Its Time -
Introduced in 1960 by Winchester Repeating Arms Company, the .256 Winchester Magnum was born during an era of rapid firearms innovation. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, manufacturers experimented with new cartridge designs that promised higher velocities, flatter trajectories, and greater versatility. Among those ambitious developments was the .256 Winchester Magnum—a unique cartridge that combined elements of both handgun and rifle design.
Unlike most rifle cartridges of its day, the .256 Winchester Magnum was developed from the .357 Magnum revolver case. Winchester engineers lengthened the case slightly and necked it down to accept a .25 caliber bullet, creating a compact, high-velocity cartridge intended primarily for varmint hunting and small game. Typical factory loads launched a 60-grain bullet at approximately 2,700 feet per second from a rifle, delivering impressive performance from such a compact case.
The cartridge was chambered in several firearms, including the Marlin Model 62 Levermatic rifle and the Ruger Hawkeye single-shot pistol. The combination of mild recoil, excellent accuracy, and flat trajectory made it appealing to hunters looking for a lightweight rifle capable of handling varmints, predators, and smaller game at practical distances.
One of the more interesting aspects of the .256 Winchester Magnum was its timing. It entered the market during a period when shooters were increasingly embracing high-speed cartridges, but it also faced stiff competition from established rounds such as the .22 Hornet, .218 Bee, and the rapidly growing family of .22 centerfire cartridges. Although the .256 offered excellent performance, it occupied a niche that many shooters found difficult to justify over more familiar alternatives.
The cartridge also arrived just as firearm preferences were beginning to shift. Bolt-action rifles were becoming increasingly popular, while many of the rifles chambered for the .256 Winchester Magnum were lever-action designs. Combined with limited rifle availability, this prevented the cartridge from achieving widespread commercial success.
Despite its relatively short production life, the .256 Winchester Magnum earned a loyal following among hunters and handloaders. Reloaders appreciated its efficient case design, modest powder requirements, and ability to produce excellent accuracy with a variety of .25 caliber bullets. Those who spent time with the cartridge often discovered that it offered far more capability than its modest commercial success would suggest.
Today, the .256 Winchester Magnum is remembered as one of the more inventive cartridges of the twentieth century. Although it never became a mainstream success, it demonstrated that creative engineering could produce impressive performance from an unconventional design. More than sixty years after its introduction, the .256 Winchester Magnum remains an intriguing chapter in the history of American sporting cartridges and a favorite among collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate firearms innovation.
Reloading Tip: When Is a Piece of Brass No Longer Safe to Reload?
One of the most common questions among reloaders is, "When should I throw this piece of brass away?" While brass is remarkably durable and can often be reloaded many times, every case eventually reaches the end of its service life. Knowing what to look for can help keep your ammunition safe and reliable.
The most obvious sign that a case should be discarded is a split case mouth or neck. Even a small crack can continue to grow during firing and resizing, making the case unsafe to reload.
Another important area to inspect is the primer pocket. If a spent primer seats with little or no resistance, the primer pocket has likely become enlarged from repeated firings or excessive pressure. Loose primer pockets cannot be repaired and are a clear indication that the case should be scrapped.
Pay close attention to the area just forward of the case head. A shiny ring or visible thinning in this location may indicate the beginning of case head separation—a potentially dangerous failure that warrants immediate disposal of the case.
Cases that show deep corrosion or pitting should also be discarded. While light tarnish is generally cosmetic, corrosion that has eaten into the brass weakens the case and can lead to failure during firing.
Not every flaw means a case is beyond saving, however. Bent case mouths are extremely common, especially with semi-automatic firearms, and are usually corrected during the resizing process. Likewise, minor dents in the shoulder or body of a bottleneck case will often disappear during resizing or after the next firing, provided they are not severe or sharply creased.
Minor scratches, discoloration, carbon staining, and tarnish are typically cosmetic and have little effect on safety or performance. The key is learning to distinguish between normal wear and damage that compromises the structural integrity of the case.
When in doubt, remember that brass is far less expensive than a damaged firearm—or an injury. If a case gives you reason to question its safety, it's usually best to err on the side of caution and recycle it. Developing good inspection habits is one of the simplest ways to ensure safe, consistent, and enjoyable reloading for years to come.
