The .30-06 Springfield traces its development to the earlier .30-03 military cartridge. Adopted by the U.S. military in 1906 as the “Cartridge, Caliber .30, Model of 1906,” the cartridge became commonly known as the .30-06, with “06” referring to the year of adoption.
