What Is .223 Remington Brass?

.223 Remington brass is the cartridge case used to assemble .223 Remington ammunition. The brass case holds the primer, powder charge, and bullet, and can typically be reloaded multiple times when properly inspected and maintained.

Because .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO share nearly identical external dimensions, reloaders frequently use both commercial .223 brass and military 5.56 brass. Once-fired brass is popular because it offers significant cost savings compared to purchasing new brass while still providing excellent performance when properly processed.

The .223 Remington cartridge is one of the most widely used rifle cartridges in North America and is commonly chambered in AR-15 rifles, bolt-action rifles, varmint rifles, and competition firearms.

.223 Remington / 5.56x45mm NATO Once-Fired Brass – Product Overview

Our once-fired .223 brass is sorted and inspected before packaging for resale to reloaders.

Many reloaders prefer once-fired .223 brass because it offers substantial cost savings compared to purchasing new brass.

This brass is commonly used for reloading ammunition for AR-15 rifles, bolt-action rifles, competition shooting, training, hunting, and general recreational shooting.

All cases utilize Boxer primer pockets and small rifle primers unless otherwise specified. Brass is typically mixed headstamp and may include both commercial .223 Remington and military-style 5.56 NATO cases.

Cases are processed through automated and manual sorting systems to remove steel, aluminum, damaged, and defective casings prior to packaging. Product may be offered in various processing states depending on the selected product option.

All orders include approximately 2–3% additional brass to compensate for any unusable cases that may pass inspection.

Reloaders seeking additional information about cartridge case preparation, inspection, and terminology can visit our Brass Information page.

.223 Remington vs 5.56 NATO Brass

Although .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO share the same basic external cartridge dimensions, there are several differences that reloaders should understand when processing brass and developing loads.

  • Many military 5.56 NATO cases utilize crimped primer pockets.
  • Crimped primer pockets generally require swaging or reaming before a new primer can be seated.
  • Military 5.56 brass may have slightly less internal capacity than some commercial .223 brass.
  • Case capacity varies by manufacturer and headstamp.
  • Always follow published load data and work up loads safely.

Chamber and Safety Information

.223 Remington and 5.56 NATO ammunition use similar external dimensions but are loaded to different specifications.

In general, .223 Remington ammunition can be safely fired in a rifle chambered for 5.56 NATO. However, firing 5.56 NATO ammunition in a rifle chambered only for .223 Remington may result in increased chamber pressures. Always follow firearm manufacturer recommendations and verify chamber markings before use.

Military Primer Pocket Crimps

Many military 5.56 NATO cases feature primer pocket crimps designed to secure primers during military use. Before reloading, these crimps typically must be removed through primer pocket swaging or reaming. Commercial .223 brass is less likely to contain primer crimps, although exceptions exist.

Common Uses for .223 and 5.56 Brass

The .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO cartridges are among the most popular rifle cartridges in North America. Reloaders commonly use once-fired brass for:

  • AR-15 reloading
  • Target shooting
  • Competition shooting
  • Predator hunting
  • Varmint hunting
  • Training and recreational shooting

.223 / 5.56 Brass Processing

All of our .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO brass is sorted through multiple stages of automated and manual inspection. First, trommels remove rimfire cases, steel cases, and debris. Next, Roll Sorters separate cases by body and rim diameter, followed by SnapSorters that sort by case length. Finally, every batch is hand-inspected to remove damaged, defective, aluminum, or unwanted cases.

Depending on the selected product option, brass may then be cleaned using our industrial wet vibratory cleaning systems and dried in heated corncob media to improve appearance and remove residue.

To ensure customer satisfaction, every order includes approximately 2–3% additional brass to compensate for any unusable cases that may have escaped inspection.

Our once-fired .223 and 5.56 brass is a cost-effective choice for reloaders seeking quality rifle brass for target shooting, training, competition, or general-purpose ammunition production. Bulk quantities are available and qualify for tiered pricing discounts.

.223 Remington vs 5.56 NATO Brass

.223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO use nearly identical external case dimensions, making the brass generally interchangeable for reloading when proper load development practices are followed.

Important differences reloaders should understand include:

  • Many 5.56 NATO cases feature crimped primer pockets that must be swaged or reamed before installing a new primer.
  • Military 5.56 brass is often slightly thicker than commercial .223 brass.
  • Because of thicker case walls, some 5.56 brass may have slightly reduced internal case capacity.
  • Case capacity varies by manufacturer and headstamp.
  • Always begin with published starting loads and work up carefully when changing brass brands or case types.

Chamber Safety Information

.223 Remington ammunition can generally be fired safely in rifles chambered for 5.56 NATO. However, firing full-pressure 5.56 NATO ammunition in a rifle chambered exclusively for .223 Remington may create excessive chamber pressure due to chamber geometry differences.

Always verify the chamber designation marked on your firearm and follow the firearm manufacturer's recommendations.

Key Differences Between .223 and 5.56 Brass

  • Primer Pocket: 5.56 brass commonly contains military primer crimps.
  • Case Capacity: Military brass may have slightly reduced internal volume.
  • Pressure Considerations: Reduced internal volume can affect load development.
  • Headstamps: Many NATO-spec cases display the NATO cross-in-circle marking.
  • Reloading Preparation: Military brass often requires additional primer pocket preparation.

Brass arrived quickly and was very clean.  Mostly speer 223's with a beefy burr on the flash hole that needed to be cleaned up.  Very pleased and will be ordering more as soon as if comes back into stock.

Thank you very much.

223 / 5.56 rifle brass
5
5.56 brass has the primer crimp, .223 has a large % being crimped.  We run it all through a crimp remover, problem solved.  The brass shows up quickly, it is clean, ready to work with.  We have purchased from many sources, to date, this site has been outstanding for us.  A business must be concerned about price and quality.  These folks have both!!!

Great Product - 5.56, 300blk, and 9mm
5
Ordered 500 5.56, 9m mand 300blk.  Oly tossed 1 5.56 case so far.  More 5.56 but somewhere close to 50/50 is fine.  Last place I ordered from sent me 500 and about 475 had zero or flattened headstamps.  Sent them back and glad I found this seller.  Will order here from now on.  Understand the headstamps missing is not huge but for a slow OCD reloader it was just not right.

.223 once fired brass
5
I NEVER send reviews, but I have been just blown away by this company and its product.  Ordered 100 rounds of once fired brass. Received 103 rounds of immaculate mirror polished .223/5.56 brass. Have been reloading for 50 years and load for 12 calibers-now 13 due to my gift of an AR rifle. Have ordered loading supplies on the internet since its invention and have never received product and service like i have from this company. Don't know how they did it...I'm in Washington state and they are in Florida. I ordered on Monday and received my order on Thursday afternoon, and we are on opposite ends of the country. A+ company. In the process making another order, a customer for life! Thank you US Reloading Supply!

Once Fired 223/5.56 Bras
5
I received my order of 700 pieces of once fired 223 brass.  Upon opening and inspection I was thoroughly pleased.  The packaging was adequate, and the brass appeared to be in good condition.  As I began to work through and process the brass I was even more impressed.   All of the brass was extremely clean, and straight with no incorrect calibers or unusable pieces includes.  If you're looking for once fired brass and are considering US Reloading Supply then by all means look no further.  I will definitely be placing more orders in the future myself.

Purchased some cleaned and polished 223 brass and I am very happy with it. They have the best prices I've found for what you get. They are really clean and polished to a shine. There are some dented ones but that's to be expected. Definitely recommend

At least Once fired
4
Brass is clean and polished on the outside and the shipping and handling are top notch. The brass checked so far (1/3 of this batch) is about .02-.03 over max length so not just Once fired -yes, the length check made prior to resizing. It's useable brass, yes. Buy it again, yes. Just be ready to trim to length.

Appreciate the comments, and as we state in all of our descriptions, Once Fired does NOT mean, fired once, it just means it has been fired at LEAST once. No way we can know how many times they have been fired. Even from our indoor ranges and LEO ranges, we get brass that has been shot several times.
Good brass
4
Good product, brass came very clean and brand new looking.  My first purchase was the fully processed brass that’s a few dollars more expensive and I was incredibly happy with that. I had to take a star off of this batch of cases because the primer pockets are crimped apparently and they won’t seat without going through a time consuming process of removing it for all 700 I got.  Still good cases, just added a lot of time to the process that I didn’t have to do with the “processed” brass I bought previously but it was out of stock.

Thank you for the feedback. However, the product description for this product specifically states that there may be commercial or military cases. For future reference, we do not sort by primer crimp, so anywhere from 0%-100% of any given order may have crimped primer pockets.

I purchased a totally of 300 of this product (x3 100 packs.) After processing all 300 it was noted that one case was a 350 Legend case (it happens and is to be expected). One case included was primed with a Berdan primer (again to be expected however, 1 in 300 is great). Once the primers were removed they were measured with an average of 1.711" over all length with a total of 22 cases measuring under 1.699" (7.33%). Once measured and ran through a full length resizing die all were inspected by hand with no dents, cracks, or pressure marks (not to be expected EVERY time but it sure is great when it happens).

For the price and the customer service/shipping time these are by far my favorite once fired brass and they will be ordered again.

Thanks. Reason we put a limit on it, is some of the commercial reloading guys were ordering 25k to 50k at a time, so no one else could get an order in. They would watch the site and as soon as we posted, they would take the entire inventory.

I am using the cartridges in an art project and they are perfect and the price is right! At the same time I ordered these, I ordered a similar product from another source. The delivery process was a nightmare and also, the box was demolished when it finally arrived over a week late. So I really appreciate it when a company does it right! Thanks for being competent when so many others are not.

I bought quite a few times from US Reloading.
The brass is at top quality and cleaned very well.
The price/quality/quantity is the best of all of my purchases on brass.

Thank you so much

That is the most beautiful package of brass I have ever seen in my life! I am your customer for life.

I had ordered 2,000 military 556 cases from another company that looked like they were run over by an M1A Abrams tank!!! Im still taking blood pressure meds because I’m so pissed off!

Thanks Jeff!
Very satisfied

A few weeks ago, we placed a large order for 223 brass (20,000 pieces) and a good sized order of the Hornady 55 grain bullets (60,000) for our local reloading club. Called and spoke to Jim, as it was a good sized order. Jim assured us that we should have everything within two weeks. Well, in a week and a half, we had it all! Count us as a satisfied customer, and we'll be back!

Right size for me

2,500 to a package is the right size for me, just about enough for a years worth of reloading. These were clean and looked like in good shape. Like the free shipping too.

Great product, great service!

I ordered 200 of the non-processed cases to try out, along with 200 bullets on my first order with USR.  Jim sent an email informing me that they were waiting on the bullets, and offered different shipping options and/or the option to cancel.  I told him to wait and ship it all together.  Everything arrived in a few days and I was impressed.  The cases were very clean and the bullets were packed in a re-usable container.  Their customer service really sold me, I certainly plan on being a repeat customer for a long time to come.  Thank you USR

223 Brass on Sale?
5
Hi, just wondered if you ever just put certain items on sale, like 223 brass? These were a great bargain, but I'd be willing to buy more.

500 223 brass

Saw your posting for 223 once fired brass for sale on Facebook and had to try some. Got 500 rounds of it and it sure loaded sweet. Not quite as shiny as the brass in the photos, but it was really clean. Loaded quick and easy, think I had 3 bad out of the 500 so considering you sent 510, I had lots to spare! Keep it up, especially that fast shipping!
