The .405 Winchester: Theodore Roosevelt's "Big Medicine" -

Few cartridges can claim a connection to one of America’s most famous presidents, but the .405 Winchester holds that distinction proudly. Introduced in 1904 by Winchester Repeating Arms Company, the .405 Winchester quickly earned a reputation as a powerful hunting cartridge and secured its place in firearms history through its association with Theodore Roosevelt.

The cartridge was developed for the Winchester Model 1895, a rifle designed by the legendary John Moses Browning. Unlike many earlier lever-action rifles that utilized tubular magazines, the Model 1895 featured a box magazine, allowing it to safely use more powerful, pointed-centerfire cartridges. This innovation helped pave the way for cartridges like the .405 Winchester, which offered substantially greater power than many of its predecessors.

The .405 Winchester originally fired a 300-grain bullet at approximately 2,200 feet per second, producing impressive energy for the era. It was designed as a cartridge capable of handling large and potentially dangerous game, making it attractive to hunters seeking a powerful rifle for use in North America and abroad.

The cartridge's most famous chapter began in 1909 when Theodore Roosevelt embarked on his celebrated African safari. Roosevelt carried several firearms during the expedition, but he developed a particular fondness for his Winchester Model 1895 chambered in .405 Winchester. In his writings, Roosevelt referred to the rifle as his “Big Medicine,” a nickname that has remained closely associated with the cartridge ever since.

During the safari, Roosevelt used the .405 Winchester on a wide variety of game, praising its effectiveness and reliability. His endorsement brought considerable attention to both the rifle and cartridge, helping to cement their reputation among sportsmen of the early twentieth century.

Although the .405 Winchester eventually declined in popularity as newer bolt-action rifles and cartridges entered the market, it never disappeared entirely. Collectors, lever-action enthusiasts, and hunters have continued to appreciate its combination of power, history, and unique character. Interest in the cartridge experienced a resurgence in the early 2000s when modern reproductions of the Winchester Model 1895 once again became available.

Today, the .405 Winchester remains one of the most iconic lever-action cartridges ever developed. Its connection to Theodore Roosevelt, its role in African hunting history, and its association with one of John Browning’s most innovative rifle designs ensure that it occupies a special place in firearms lore. More than a century after its introduction, the .405 Winchester continues to embody the adventurous spirit of an earlier era and stands as a lasting testament to American firearms innovation.
